Finishing

The next five months of pigs life is called finishing.  This is the process of growing up until a weight of approximately 230 pounds is reached.  After this some gilts may be selected to become sows.  The rest will be shipped out to the stockyards, or packing plant.

This is a picture of pigs in a finishing barn.  They have automatic waterers and they are fed automatically by computers.  These pigs are standing on slats which means that there are small holes in the floor for their poop to fall through into a pit.  The pit these pigs are standing over is two feet deep, but as they get older they will be moved over an eight foot deep pit to hold more manure.

This pig is near market. He is looking over the fence at the other pens to view his fellow pig friends. Some one has a bad climbing habit.

A pig's main job in the finishing barn is to EAT ALL DAY.
