Baby Piglets

Just before sows have their babies they are put into farrowing crates. They are called farrowing crates because the next four weeks of a sows life is called farrowing.  Anyway, they are put into these crates so that they do not lay on the babies after they are born in the crate.

The pictures above and to the right show sows with litters in crates.  A sow normally has about 10 to twelve piglets per litter.  The sow above has nine babies and the sow to the right has a pile of 14 babies, believe it or not!!!

This picture shows how small a baby pig is when it is born compared to the human hand.

Cute and Adorable

These baby pigs to the left and below are approximately only twelve hours old. They huddle under the heat lamp to stay warm.

Pigs usually give birth to two litters every year.  The largest number of piglets born in a single litter was 34.  The two-day birth occurred in Denmark in June, 1961.
